If you’re feeling more adventurous, see if you can conquer the 199 steps, which lead up to the historic 7th century Whitby abbey, said to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’ and boasting a wealth of history.

Visit the historic Captain Cook Memorial Museum, hosting a range of exhibitions detailing Cook’s voyages and life. You can even sail out of the harbour on a replica of one of his ships. The town is incredibly proud of its seafaring heritage and you can still see the fishermen bringing home their freshly caught bounty, in fact the fish and chips in Whitby is regarded as some of the best in the world.
