Whitewalls Cottage
The picturesque village of Mithian is situated just inland from the North Cornish coastline in a gentle peaceful valley. This lovely cottage, built c.1750, is cool in the summer and offers a small private garden seating area and cosily warm in the winter with its’ open hearth and snug living room. Whitewalls Cottage sits in a cluster of thatched cottages and is just 50 yards away from the Miners Arms, the villages’ 16th century inn. The inn boasts a beautiful Elizabethan courtyard and serves food every day for you to relax and enjoy after a long day. If a more formal restaurant is your wish, the 18th century Rose-in-Vale country house with its’ rose covered exterior will tick all the boxes. It possesses a mouth-watering menu and is a leisurely ten minute stroll to the other end of the village.
Perhaps your idea of an idyllic break is to sit and read a good book in the sunshine or stroll along and admire local handicrafts? St Agnes’ craft trail will delight you then. In addition to its’ eclectic mix of art galleries, craft workshops and museums, nearby St Agnes offers all the amenities a guest could need including a bakery, butchers, banks, post office, chemist, library and food shopping . There is also a good variety of cafés and pubs in St Agnes and, of course, a fish and chip shop for a fresh fish supper by the sea.
This area is a walkers’ paradise as it offers everything from a stroll through leafy woods in the Jericho Valley to hiking and clambering over rocks at Trevellas Cove just 35 minute walk away. A short hike over the cliff top to Trevaunance Cove can take walkers to the Driftwood Spars, the local public house, before the return trip home. Perranporth is only 5 miles up the coast and guests can walk along the coastal path and get there in about an hour and a half. After taking in the breath-taking views across the Celtic Sea and refreshing themselves guest can either walk back along quiet country lanes or take the local bus if they wish.
If walking is not your interest then perhaps surfing at one of the many North Coast beaches can offer more of a thrill. Many of the beaches offer surf schools for beginners and those who might like a quick refresher course before hitting the waves. Of course other watersports facilities are available too and the nearest suitable beaches for either watersports or surfing are Chapel Porth, Trevaunance Cove and Perranporth.
There are numerous bicycle routes and cycleways criss-crossing the area and cyclists can chose from quiet country lanes or the longer and more challenging Portreath to Devoran cycleway which follows the old mineral tram road. Bring your own bicycle or they can be hired at Bissoe (8 miles away) or the Bike Barn near Porthtowan (6 miles away). Some other outdoor pursuits nearby include deep sea fishing, a riding stables and a cliff top golf course in Perranporth. With so many activities you are sure to find one to suit.
Within an hour’s drive of Whitewalls there are many attractions; from a boat trip along the River Fal from Truro to Falmouth or a wander around National Trust Gardens at Trelessick and Gendurgan to a walk out to St Michael’s Mount when the tide is right. Favourite places to dine are the historical Pandora Inn at Restronguet Passage with its thatched roof and great food, and Lewinnick Lodge on Pentire Headland for its simple, fresh seasonal fare. For a wonderful way to end the day sit here for an evening drink and watch the sunset.
