Stonnwall Manor
The ancient market town of Frome is ideally located for touring the wonderful county of Somerset. Within easy reach are Longleat Safari Park, Stourhead House and Gardens, Bath, Cheddar, Wells Cathedral, Stonehenge and Glastonbury. Frome has kept all the charm of a small town whilst inviting all of the big name stores that you would expect to find in a town double its size. Why not explore the individual and unique shops and then take a break in one of the tea rooms or cafes for homemade meals and cakes.

Frome is surrounded by many picturesque and historic villages which are well worth visiting. Nunnery and Farleigh Hungerford have romantic castles and Mells is both the home of the nursery rhyme Little Jack Horner and also the burial place of the war poet Siegfried Sassoon. Beckington and Rode have fine parish churches and Norton St Philip is renowned for a skirmish in the Duke of Monmouth's campaign in 1685. There are easy walking trails around all these villages and good local guide books.

Further afield is the heritage city of Bath with its world-famous Roman Baths, Royal Crescent and Thermae Bath Spa. Wells is the smallest city in England but is full of historic interest with its splendid Cathedral and moated Bishop's Palace. Bristol offers a contrast as a vibrant regional centre for the arts with museums, galleries and multi-media centres. It also has many family attractions such as Bristol Zoo and the science centre, At Bristol.

If you are looking to rent a large house for a family gathering or are a group of friends getting together for a holiday or special celebration, then it is hard to imagine a more perfect house to hire!

Accommodation:
Stonnwall Manor is a truly magnificent Grade I listed Elizabethan Manor standing proudly amidst its own private, beautifully landscaped gardens set within a Local Preservation Area. This 400 year old masterpiece hides behind tall stone walls with entry via automatic gates down a sweeping gravel driveway flanked by huge 600-year-old beech trees. Described as one of the finest examples of a 16th-century stone built manor, it boasts virtually all original characteristics: stone gabled roofs, mullioned and leaded light windows, historic fireplaces, decorative plaster ceiling mouldings, oak stripped floors, 15th-century panelling, huge oak beams. Arranged over three floors with 9 bedrooms, 5 reception rooms, 2 kitchens, 3 bathrooms some with period slipper baths, bidet, separate showers, 4 x WC and a host of other communal rooms.

A recent sympathetic refit features the latest technology such as digital keyless entry, communal rooms automatically light up on entry and stained glass windows are beautifully back-lit at night. There is plenty to do; enjoy cream teas on the elevated gazebo with wonderful views, walk around the estate's formal gardens, rockeries, pond, croquet lawn and underground bomb shelter now themed as a 1940s living room. Other pleasant walks lead from the manor past many delightful cottages to the town centre.

Inside, the drawing room is open-plan to the living room, ideal for large social gatherings, with giant Elizabethan thrones and huge chessboard table with giant pieces. There is a large dining-room with walk-in fireplace, enormous rosewood dining table (its unusual square shape allows all 18 guests to see each other) and it is ideal for a medieval feast or banquet. There is a large well-equipped farmhouse-style kitchen, breakfast room, pantry, games room, music room with ornamental piano and pull down double bed hidden in a panelled wall. An ingenious double bass opens up to reveal a cocktail bar - ideal for pre-dinner drinks gatherings. Below stairs is a secret humorous folly room with doll-size period furniture.

The central galleried oak staircase leads to the west wing which has a panelled library with extensive book collection (with entire section for children). All bedrooms are themed with double four-poster beds, window seats, most with wash basin, and some are grand suites with writing desks, dressing tables and modern showers.
