Alfriston, as a village, is perhaps most famous for its church in the centre, unusually large in size in relation to its location and local populace, which has long held the nick-name “The Catherdal of the South Downs". Located in the River Cuckmere valley, it’s also well-known by fans of ancient history for having been occupied since Neolithic times as well as a centre for smuggling. It also has a very old Inn dating back to the mid-1300’s when it was a religious “hostel” used by pilgrims and monks.

Alfriston’s is also well-known by the artistic fraternity. The hymn, turned into a hit pop song by singer Cat Stevens, was written in the village by Elanor Farjeon in the 1930’s, and iconic films including “The Chalk Garden” (with Sir John Mills and Deborah Kerr) and “Waltz of the Toreadors” (with Peter Sellers) were both filmed there.
