Coachman's Cottage Alston, Eden Valley, Cumbria
Located in the heart of the North Pennines, the Eden Valley abounds with natural beauty and wildlife. Eden is wonderful walking country, whether a leisurely walk along river banks or the Pennine Way or a hike over the fells. Cyclists can follow the coast to coast (C2C) and Cumbria Cycle Way or enjoy the tracks that abound in the area. And take a drive up to Hartside Pass on the A686, voted one of the best drives in the world! You will enjoy a panoramic view over the Eden Valley across to the Lake District and north over Carlisle and the Solway Firth to Scotland.
In addition, there is a wide range of attractions to visit during your stay; historic houses, castles, gardens, craft workshops, galleries and museums (there are over seventy visitor attractions in Eden). The River Eden provides challenging fishing, and has in place a "Go Wild" scheme to enable visitors to try wild fishing on the river. The Alston Moor Golf Club is a 10-hole golf course overlooking spectacular scenery. It is the highest course in England. The South Tynedale Railway runs steam trains from Alston’s Victorian station.
This North Pennine region is sparsely settled, and Alston, a high market town, is at the junction of five historic trans-Pennine routes, four of which reach heights of 2000 feet. To the south is the Lake District and to the North Roman Wall country. The town's isolated position, miles away from any other major settlement, surrounded by fells and moors, makes it particularly appealing for walkers and wilderness lovers.
Coachman’s Cottage is a cosy hideaway dating back to the 1700s. It is just a 5 minute brisk walk (or 10 minute leisurely stroll!) from the cobbled high street, pubs, cafes and shops of Alston. There are many local food products to be found and served in the shops and cafes, a well-stocked supermarket and craft shops too. The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cottage is a comfortable and cosy self-catering cottage with an enclosed garden.
